Need of Skill Development for Youth of India

Being one of the largest young population in the world, India is on the pathway to experience lucrative opportunities and challenges. With growing industrialization, one needs to cope with the immensely competitive world and there is a huge requirement of a skilled workforce. In the current scenario, big economies of the world are in search of the best-skilled professionals who can handle the complex tasks with grace. Below are some of the major schemes launched in India to boost skill development.

Craftsmen Training Scheme

Craftsmen Training Scheme was started by Government of India in 1950 to ensure steady flow skill workers across different sectors. The scheme aims at providing industry-relevant training to the aspiring youth of India to make them employable for domestic industries. It came into existence for improving industrial production in terms of quality and quantity through systematic skill development training.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY)

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) is skilling and placement program started by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD). The DDU-GKY is launched on 25th September 2014 on the occasion of the 98th birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. The motive of DDU-GKY initiative is to skill the financial backward youth of India. It focused on reducing the poverty by increasing the employment for the youth of India.

Financial Assistance for Skill Training of Persons with Disabilities

Financial Assistance for Skill Training of Persons with Disabilities scheme was started in 2015. The scheme targets at financially supporting the persons with disabilities for skill training. This scheme benefits those with not less than 40% disability. Candidates need to produce disability certificate issued by the respective government authority in order to be eligible for this scheme.

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme was launched in 2015 under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The scheme is designed to enable and mobilize Indian youth to take up industry-relevant quality skill training to become more employable. It also aims to increase the capability and productivity of the existing workforce and align skill development with the actual requirements of the industry.

National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS)

The government of India has launched the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) with the focus on promoting apprenticeship training. It also brought to incentivize employers to engage more apprentices. The NAPS scheme has been initiated with the objective of increasing the count of apprenticeship to produce more skilled professionals. It has begun with the target of providing skill training and placement to 50 lakh Indian nationals until 2020.

The recent research study shows that certification-based training can generate new job opportunities with the help of skill development program. For the success of skill India initiative, the youth of India should be empowered with proper formal education along with vocational training programs.
